Message from the Dean
Welcome! Our newest students, Cohort '17, have arrived. Twenty-three students from the United States, China, Ethiopia, Israel, India, Mexico, Pakistan, Poland, and South Korea walked through our doors this fall. What they found were not only the challenges of policy analysis, microeconomics, econometrics, and social and behavioral sciences, but the promises and potential of our emerging curriculum. Policy design studios are developing new tools to address complex policy problems and applying these to issues of homelessness. Our technology lab pilot encouraged students to use technology to improve civil discourse. And our very own Pardee RANDroid is making it possible for our offsite faculty to join in classroom debates. Exciting changes for tackling critical issues.
You can learn more learn more about these real-world, hands-on, initial implementations of the redesigned Pardee RAND in this issue of Findings. It is not, of course, just about the technology. It’s also about thinking through and gaining understanding of policy problems by putting ideas on "paper" — electronic or otherwise. You can see what the Pardee RAND community is thinking about by reading about the new Pardee Times, a student-driven newspaper, or my forthcoming book I Am Not A Tractor! We’re asking hard questions and offering up some new solutions. Join us and get reading!
Happy New Year!
Susan
