About the Program

There are disconnects between the conventional approaches to security, development and governance, and disconnects between nongovernmental organizations and the military. These disconnects perpetuate the conflict and misery suffered by many of the world’s most vulnerable populations.

Jim Hake, founder and CEO of Spirit of America, will discuss a new model of providing private development assistance in direct support of U.S. national security objectives. This new model is based on decentralization, private-public collaboration and not-neutral assistance. He will discuss how this differs from approaches based on “universal humanitarian principles” and will examine lessons from the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan and conflict prevention missions in Africa and South America.

About the Speaker

Jim Hake, an internet and technology entrepreneur, founded Spirit of America (SoA) in response to the attacks of 9/11. SoA is a privately funded nonprofit that provides humanitarian and economic assistance in support of U.S. troops and diplomats and the local people and partners they seek to help. General (Ret.) Stanley McChrystal calls Spirit of America, “an innovation important to our country’s future.”

Hake’s views on aid, assistance and development draw on his experiences with start-ups, networks and venture capital. Hake is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, an Honorary Member of the U.S. Army Civil Affairs Regiment and was twice named a Technology Entrepreneur by the World Economic Forum. He founded and sold one of the first Internet media companies. He has been published in The Wall Street Journal, appeared on Fox and Bloomberg and lectured/given talks at West Point, the Bush School, the Fletcher School, the TED Conference, the Aspen Institute and Georgetown.
