Alum Cheryl Damberg (cohort '89) was recently appointed to the California Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) Health Equity and Quality Committee. The committee was established to issue recommendations with the goals of eliminating health care disparities and establishing standards for health plans to assess the equity and quality of the care they provide to Californians.

The committee convened its first virtual meeting on February 24 and is expected to provide recommendations to the DMHC director by September 30. The recommendations will guide DMHC in adopting equity and quality measures, and health plans will be required to report annually on their performance in meeting those standards. DMHC expects to issue a report on health equity and quality compliance in California in 2025.

All committee meetings will be open to the public. See the committee’s webpage for connection details when they are available.

Damberg directs the RAND Center of Excellence on Health System Performance and holds the Distinguished Chair in Health Care Payment Policy. She and her fellow committee members were selected to reflect California’s diverse population and for their experience with the state’s health care delivery system while working as consumer advocates, health plan and hospital employees, providers, health care policy experts, and state government officials, with employees of government agencies being nonvoting members.
