Thirteen Pardee RAND students presented research posters to more than 50 RAND colleagues on February 14. Attendees had the opportunity to rate the presentations, and the top presenters were honored at a panel discussion the following afternoon.

The two Career Services events, Spotlight on Applied Research (SOAR) and The Gears of Effective Research Leadership, offered students the chance to hone their presentation skills in a supportive environment, receive constructive feedback, and then hear from RAND colleagues what it takes to be a successful research leader.

“I hope that this activity can be held every year. It is a great opportunity for students to practice and prepare for future conference presentations.”

Han-Yi Chiu (cohort '23) said SOAR "was a meaningful and rewarding experience, and I hope that this activity can be held every year. It is a great opportunity for students to practice and prepare for future conference presentations."

Chiu's poster and presentation won first prize. Lawrese Brown ('23) was first runner up, and Elliott Brennan ('20) and Samantha Matthews ('21) both received honorable mentions.

Career Services supervisor Sandy Buchan said the students "did an excellent job illustrating their work through posters and storyboarding." She added that the event showcased not only the students' abilities, but also the school's diversity. "There was a wide variety of subjects, as well as presentation styles, and students received helpful feedback from the RANDites who attended."

The presenters and their topics were as follows:

  • M Avriette: "Always 2020: A Cost Benefit Analysis of the DoD's COVID Vaccine Mandate"
  • Elliott Brennan: "Strategies for Stability: Political-Military Planning for Complex Contingency Operations in the 21st Century"
  • Lawrese Brown: "Does Exposing Students to Well-paying Jobs That Don’t Require a 4-year College Degree Decrease Students' Likelihood of Attending a 4-year College or University?"
  • Han-Yi Chiu: "Evaluating Hospital-Based ER Triage System in Mass Casualty Events in Taiwan"
  • Swaptik Chowdhury: "Equity Considerations for a Model-centric Decision-making Process"
  • Kurt Klein: "Protecting the Bulk Electric System from Geomagnetically Induced Currents: A Robust Decision-Making Approach"
  • Samantha Matthews: "The Road to 988/911 Interoperability: Three Case Studies"
  • Alexandra Ntazinda: "An Analysis of Equity in Climate Action Plans Across Los Angeles County"
  • Srikant Kumar Sahoo: "Exploring Disaster Characteristics and Health Indicators in Taiwan: Insights from TW-EM-DAT"
  • Danielle Sobol: "Does Reducing Childhood Poverty Prevent Incarceration?"
  • Joe Uchill: "85% of Critical Infrastructure is Owned by the Private Sector. Which 85%?"
  • Thomas Van Bibber: "Starlink and Nuclear Deterrence? Leveraging Commercial Space for the U.S. Nuclear Enterprise"
  • Agnes Wang: "How to Build a Future-focused School from Scratch"

At a follow-up panel discussion the next afternoon, four RAND researchers shared their insights during another Career Services-sponsored event focused on effective research leadership. Padmaja Vedula, a RAND senior information scientist, moderated the session, which 24 students attended.

The featured panelists were Professor Douglas Yeung, associate director of the Management, Technology, and Capabilities Program in the RAND Homeland Security Research Division; Krista Langeland, deputy lead of the RAND Space Enterprise Initiative; and Ellen Pint, a senior economist who previously served as associate director of the RAND Arroyo Center Manpower and Training Program.

Their discussion highlighted the importance of time management, financial discipline, and encouraging junior researcher autonomy and accountability.
