AI Governance
This course examines approaches to governing advanced and future AI systems with potentially transformative impacts on society, economy, and global power structures. Students will critically analyze recent developments in AI governance, evaluating their efficacy in addressing the potential risks and benefits of advanced AI. Through in-depth discussions, case studies, and further analytic approaches, the course will explore methods for forecasting AI developments and anticipating associated risks. We will then investigate how transformative AI may affect and be affected by international relations and power balances, focusing on potential international governance frameworks and treaties.
The course will also cover how technical mechanisms, analysis, and policies can help navigate these challenges. Finally, we will conclude with a critical examination of post-AGI governance, exploring potential scenarios and persistent challenges in a world where AI systems match or exceed human capabilities across all tasks.
