This introduction to macroeconomic policy rests on two premises. The first is that responsible policy analysts in any field need some understanding of the wrenching macroeconomic crises that the world has endured in the last dozen years and how the consequences of these crises still shape the economic, political, and policy environments. Second, although the study of macroeconomics benefits from a rich and constantly evolving body of theory, diligent students can understand the most important principles of macroeconomic policymaking without in-depth knowledge of powerful but sometimes arcane theory.
