The Families Forward Learning Center offers a two-generation learning program for low-income families with children from birth to 5 years old in Pasadena, California. This report summarizes a mixed-methods evaluation of the program that used retrospective interviews with former participants to elicit their perceptions of the program as well as analyses of student kindergarten and third-grade educational outcomes.

Researchers examine which parents need the most support. Parents with children in different age groups and those with more financial difficulty appear to need more support than those whose children are closer in age and who are not struggling financially.

Drawing on the RAND Corporation's American Educator Panels, this Data Note presents nationally representative teacher and principal survey results on several aspects of schooling during the pandemic.
Face recognition technologies (FRTs) have many practical security-related purposes, but advocacy groups and individuals have expressed apprehensions about their use. This report highlights the high-level privacy and bias implications of FRT systems. The authors propose a heuristic with two dimensions — consent status and comparison type — to help determine a proposed FRT's level of privacy and accuracy. They also identify privacy and bias concerns.

This American Educator Panels Data Note provides insight into teachers' and principals' perceptions of the need for discipline reform in their schools.
Interviews and a survey indicate that WhyWeRise, a social marketing campaign promoting community engagement with mental health issues, reached at least 30 percent of Los Angeles County youth ages 14–24 and mobilized them to improve societal support for those experiencing mental health challenges. Those exposed to the campaign were more likely than those unexposed to feel empowered to change how their communities deal with mental health issues.
Many individuals on probation in Los Angeles County face challenges with housing and employment, placing them at risk for further involvement with the criminal justice system. This report presents early findings on the progress of the Breaking Barriers program, which provides Los Angeles County adults on probation with a time-limited rental housing subsidy, case management, and employment supports.

In this Perspective, the authors review potential benefits and drawbacks of online outsourcing, including microwork and freelancing, with special reference to its potential for youth employment and poverty reduction in Indonesia. Although there are many constraints to the growth of online outsourcing, Indonesia's favorable business environment and large economy suggest that there is also significant potential for expansion of online outsourcing.
Culver City, at the crossroads of key transportation corridors in west Los Angeles, seeks to reimagine mobility, shifting from cars to other transit modes. To help realize its Transit Oriented Development (TOD) vision, Culver City partnered with the RAND Corporation to develop an implementation plan for its Rancho Higuera neighborhood using decision making under deep uncertainty (DMDU) methods embedded in a participatory "shadow" process.
The tools in this database were created by nonprofits and civil society organizations to help information consumers, researchers, and journalists navigate today's challenging information environment. Researchers identified and characterized each tool on a number of dimensions, including the type of tool, the underlying technology, and the delivery format.
Individuals returning to the community from jail often face difficulties accessing the varied health, social, and other services required to improve reentry and reduce recidivism. This report describes a pilot study, the Co-Design of Services for Health and Reentry (CO-SHARE), that engaged returning individuals and service providers who support reentry to collaborate on improving health and reentry services in Los Angeles County.
